Prof. Dr. Tania Welzel, MHS, has been the new senior physician at our clinic on Lake Constance since the start of the year. Prof. Dr. Tania Welzel, MHS, received her medical degree from Ruprecht Karl University in Heidelberg in 2000, after a clinical rotation at Harvard Medical School. She was awarded a “summa cum laude” for her doctoral thesis, which she conducted at the Institute for Medical Virology.
Prof. Dr. Welzel, MHS, began her clinical training in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Grosshadern clinic, Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. In 2003, she received a stipend from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, USA, for a fellowship at the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics.
Her research focus was on epidemiological and clinical and translational research. She published numerous multicentric studies during her time there.
In addition, she completed a Master’s program at Duke University School of Medicine (NIH-Duke Training Program in Clinical Research) in 2005, qualifying with a Master of Health Sciences (MHS).
After specialising in internal medicine at Stuttgart Clinic (Katharinenhospital), she started a training position at University Hospital Frankfurt in 2010. In 2011, she was appointed senior physician at the Clinical Study Center at the Department of Medicine 1 in Frankfurt with a focus on gastroenterology and hepatology, in particular viral, autoimmune and metabolic liver disease. From 2014, she was in charge of the gastroenterological outpatient clinic at the university. Through her work in the division of diabetology she developed a profound knowledge of the treatment of metabolic complications and nutritional medicine.
In 2014, Prof. Dr. Welzel earned her “Habilitation” from J. W. Goethe University Frankfurt. In 2018, she was awarded the title of “Ausserplanmässige Professur (APL)” from the same university.
Prof. Dr. Welzel is the author of numerous high-impact scientific studies published in prestigious, international journals. She has received national and international scientific awards, for example from the Rhine-Main Consortium for Gastroenterology, the Ludolf Krehl Prize, and a poster prize award from the Southwest German Association for Internal Medicine. The National Institutes of Health, USA, awarded her with the Fellowship Achievement Award for Outstanding Productivity and the Fellows Award for Research Excellence.
In addition to her clinical and scientific work, Prof. Dr. Welzel has pursued an interest in integrative medicine ever since she was a student. She has fasted regularly since coming to Buchinger Wilhelmi as a young student, and completed a qualification in acupuncture alongside her studies.
Prof. Dr. Welzel joined Buchinger Wilhelmi Clinic on Lake Constance as senior physician in charge of the medical team on 1 January 2020.
