New studies not only broaden our understanding of the potential of fasting, but also provide insights into fundamental processes of human metabolism. Recent work from preclinical and clinical research highlights three themes that appear particularly relevant for the future.<\/p>\n\t\n<\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;64px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;64px&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<h3>1) The importance of timing and rhythm:<br data-start=\"39\" data-end=\"42\" \/>Insights from preclinical research<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"244\">Studies in rodents make it possible to map the long-term effects of dietary and fasting interventions \u2013 developments that are difficult to capture in humans. When interpreted correctly, these models provide important guidance for human studies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"246\" data-end=\"319\">Several new findings underline the importance of duration and regularity:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"321\" data-end=\"1016\">\n<li data-start=\"321\" data-end=\"605\">\n<p data-start=\"323\" data-end=\"605\">Long-term calorie restriction protected the ovarian reserve and improved insulin sensitivity in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41514-025-00276-3\">female mice<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 significantly more than short periods of restriction. However, the positive effects only persisted when the reduction was maintained continuously.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"607\" data-end=\"802\">\n<p data-start=\"609\" data-end=\"802\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41066238\/\">another study<\/a>, time-restricted eating in obese rats stabilised the disrupted immune rhythm in the brain \u2013 even when deeper metabolic disturbances remained.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"1016\">\n<p data-start=\"806\" data-end=\"1016\">A third <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/40973652\/\">long-term study<\/a>\u00a0showed that, during sustained calorie restriction, the body preferentially supplies vital organs, supports bone health, and saves energy in less central areas.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1018\" data-end=\"1219\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">These findings suggest that the body responds particularly well to consistent, rhythmic fasting signals and thus provide a valuable starting point for future research into healthy ageing and fertility.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;64px&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1760968486903{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;padding-left: 30px !important;background-color: #F8F8F6 !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<h3>2) Individual differences: Why personalised fasting is becoming increasingly important<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"193\">Fasting has positive effects for many <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41108503\/\">people<\/a>, but not everyone responds in the same way. The new studies highlight that individual context largely determines which effects occur:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"195\" data-end=\"437\">People with primary adrenal insufficiency experienced frequent hypoglycaemia and pronounced fatigue during Ramadan fasting despite medical supervision \u2013 a clear indication that some conditions tolerate longer periods without food less well.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"439\" data-end=\"708\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41093686\/\">Postmenopausal women<\/a>\u00a0with hypertension and obesity benefited from clear improvements in cardiac structure and cellular health on a very low-calorie ketogenic diet \u2013 a population group that has so far received little attention in research.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"710\" data-end=\"1359\">New insights into metabolic individuality also help explain why outcomes vary so widely. Some people<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41087885\/\"> lose significantly more weight<\/a> than others, even when they follow the same calorie-restricted diet. Their system appears to be more flexible and better able to adapt. Similarly, a study on the remission of <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/40471649\/\">type 2 diabetes<\/a>\u00a0showed that even small differences in DNA markers could predict who would respond to a very low-calorie intervention. A simple marker of cellular health, the so-called phase angle, also helped in another study to predict the success of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41137339\/\">treatment.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1361\" data-end=\"1484\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The future of fasting will be personalised \u2013 based on individual biomarkers and tailored to each person\u2019s health situation.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;64px&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<h3>3) Der K\u00f6rper als vernetztes System: Fasten wirkt nie isoliert<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"149\">Modern research increasingly views the body as a finely tuned network. Recent findings illustrate how closely physiological processes are interwoven:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"151\" data-end=\"986\">People who remain physically active during <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41057847\/\">caloric restriction<\/a> are better able to maintain muscle strength and metabolic health \u2013 an effect that is consistent with our own clinical experience.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"151\" data-end=\"986\">In oncology, it has been shown that, under nutrient deprivation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-08588-w\">tumor cells<\/a> cooperate by exchanging protein building blocks. Simply reducing calories is therefore not sufficient to selectively starve tumors.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"151\" data-end=\"986\">Microbiome research is also advancing: instead of focusing on individual bacterial strains, attention is turning to functional groups that act together, help stabilize blood glucose levels, and support healthy circadian rhythms.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"151\" data-end=\"986\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12552724\/#:~:text=These%20findings%20suggest%20that%20diet,therapeutic%20strategy%20for%20healthy%20aging.\">Blood<\/a> from young, intermittently fasting rats reduced inflammation and improved intestinal structure in older animals \u2013 an indication that fasting generates systemic signals that reach many tissues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"1172\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The key insight is this: fasting acts through biological networks, not through isolated mechanisms. At our clinic in Marbella, we are currently conducting a study on physical activity during fasting \u2013 building on previous data showing how crucial movement is for preserving muscle health. Using DEXA scans, we can measure changes in body composition with much greater precision and tailor future programmes even more closely to individual needs. In addition, the clinic uses DEXA scans to obtain a more precise picture of changes in body composition.
