Dr. Françoise Wilhelmi de Toledo and the Future of Fasting
Dr. Françoise Wilhelmi de Toledo was a visionary physician, the heart of the Buchinger Wilhelmi clinics, and a lifelong pioneer of therapeutic fasting.
In her final recorded interview, she left us with a beautiful distillation of her life’s work, her philosophy, and her hopes for the future of human health. We wish to share these final reflections with our community to honour her enduring legacy.

A Philosophy Rooted in Human Nature
Dr. Wilhelmi de Toledo did not view fasting as a modern trend, a simple diet, or a deprivation. To her, it was an intrinsic, evolutionary survival mechanism—a physiological necessity tied to the cosmic rhythms of our planet.
She believed that humans are governed by two major natural cycles: the daily circadian rhythm (which dictates our need for intermittent fasting and sleep) and the seasonal rhythm (which historically required prolonged fasting during times of scarcity). When asked why humanity has disconnected from fasting, she was quick to correct the premise:
“It is not a practice, in fact, it is human physiology.” [14:18]
What she stood for was the restoration of these natural cycles in an era of overabundance. She frequently spoke about how our modern society—with its constant exposure to artificial light, screens, and processed foods—has severed our connection to our own biological programming [17:13]. By reintroducing fasting, she taught, we initiate a profound physiological reset. We clear out inflammation, restore our metabolic flexibility, and find the emotional and spiritual clarity that she called “spiritual fitness” [32:26].
The True Meaning of “Complementary” Medicine
Dr. Wilhelmi de Toledo’s most radical shift in perspective was her view on the efficacy of fasting compared to modern medical interventions. While fasting is often dismissed by the mainstream as an “alternative” or “complementary” practice, she firmly believed the exact opposite was true.
In her final interview, she completely upended this narrative, asserting that our foundational health lies in our daily habits and our body’s innate capacity to heal:
“For me, the entire great medical industry is complementary medicine, and this [fasting, nutrition, sleep, and emotional balance] is the base medicine.” [33:04]
She championed rigorous scientific research to prove this efficacy—collaborating with top researchers and using MRI scans to show that fasting does not cause muscle loss, but rather initiates a healing metabolic switch [28:42].
She recognized the immense value of modern medicine, but she believed it had been put in the wrong place in our hierarchy of care. Her final message to us was a call to reclaim our autonomy over our health, using the medical industry only when strictly necessary:
“Discover the extraordinary capacity of your own person, of your own genetic code, and that way you will use medicine when you really need it, but as a complement… a medication from time to time, and an operation because that also saves lives. One must not be completely ungrateful… we must put things in their proper place.” [56:29]
Her Lasting Invitation
Dr. Françoise Wilhelmi de Toledo’s work transformed the lives of thousands across generations. She leaves behind a clinic, a family, and a global community forever changed by her warmth, her scientific rigor, and her unyielding belief in the human body. Every fasting programme in our clinics still rests on the physiology she spent her life describing.
“Fascinate yourself with this intrinsic capacity of the human body. It is so extraordinary what we are capable of, what we have within our programming that we ignore.” [54:11]
She will be deeply missed, but her teachings will continue to guide us.
